Music in Castle Chapel

Music in Castle Chapel

The University College Chapel Choir, considered the finest collegiate choir in Durham, is a fully auditioned ensemble of sixteen choral scholars and choristers.  Music in chapel is led by the Director of Music, this year Josh Ridley, who is an undergraduate reading music. Singers are a mix of members of Castle and other colleges within the university and represent diverse backgrounds and areas of study. The choir’s mission is to perform sacred music of the highest quality in the service of traditional Anglican liturgy in the Castle’s two chapels, the 11th century Norman Chapel and the 16th century Tunstall Chapel. The choir sings weekly choral evensong on Thursdays and sung Eucharist on Sundays during term time. In addition, the choir’s schedule includes regular engagements in Durham Cathedral as well as other churches and societies in the North East, the annual college Carol Service, concerts, vocal master classes, CD recordings—including a Christmas album (January 2012)—and summer tours—most recently to Krakow (August 2016) Munich (July/August 2015),  Oxford (August 2014), the West Country (August 2013), and Milan (July 2012).

Auditions for the 2016-17 choir will take place at the beginning of Michaelmas Term. For more information about auditioning for the choir, please contact the Director of Music.
